A few months ago, we posted about a cool new rooftop exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Big Bambú” is a 50-ft. structure made of bamboo and nylon rope. The exhibit embraces the concept of organic art, changing bit by bit each day as it continues to be built by a team of rock climbers. The project began on April 27 and will be complete by Oct. 31, 2010.

The second phase of the installation was unveiled on Tuesday. In the next few months, the crew will stretch out the expanse of the Met’s rooftop and build the outer layer of the structure.
Originally, the creators envisioned using metal as the building material. However, after considering the cost and danger of metal, they decided to use bamboo instead. They purchased large bamboo stalks from Georgia, and small ones from South Carolina.

Compare the pictures to the one in our previous post to see how much progress they’ve made!

Interested in joining the bamboo movement but don’t know how to start? Pick up this informative and easy-to-read book, available online at Amazon or at most bookstores.

Filled with terrific gift-giving ideas, one-day projects to do with children, and practical home improvement projects, “How to Build with Bamboo” welcomes readers to the world of bamboo. The book includes step-by-step illustrations on how to build your own bamboo items, including unique projects such as a plant holder, picture frame, porch swing, candle holder, privacy panel, lampshade, chest of bins, luggage rack and much more. “How-To Build with Bamboo” is also a great resource on bamboo in general, with a section on the history, philosophy and environmental advantages of the renewable resource.

The author, Joseph Scheer, has been designing, producing and marketing his bamboo creations for nearly twenty years. With a thorough background in science, he has been a teacher, researcher, technician, and inventor, as well as a builder, contractor, sailor and artist. He currently markets a bamboo-appointed vacation home in Rincon, Puerto Rico that he built and furnished.

Bamboo is everywhere these days. While most consumers are already used to seeing the environmentally-friendly material used in products like floorboards and bicycles, the newest bamboo trend is as protective casing for technology.

Throughout the last year, many computer companies, including Dell have opted to go green with their packaging – choosing bamboo for their protective case used for shipping. Intel has even made its own line of laptops equipped with bamboo covers, which it calls ‘ASUS bamboo series.

The very latest bamboo cases on the market are for the new iPhone 4.

Companies that use bamboo in their packaging and casing materials cite its cost-competitiveness, strength, flexibility and cushion, and its appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers as reasons they use the material.

Happy babies are loved, fed, comfortable and dry. Besides the most crucial component of loving arms, a baby wants to be snuggly secure, warm (but not too hot) and surrounded by softness - along with being fed and entertained! When buying for your baby or a baby you love, consider not only the cuteness of the product but also how that product is going to feel to the baby.

• Will it be scratchy, rough or hot?

• Will it create discomfort, which results in an unhappy baby and unhappy parents?

• OR – will it provide softness and snuggly comfort, resulting in a peaceful life for the little one and parents?
As we all know, the key to preventing and treating diaper rash is to keep your baby’s diaper area clean, cool and dry. Because a baby’s skin is so delicate, heat and dampness can easily cause irritations and break-outs outside the diaper area, as well. To have true moisture management, you have to have an optimum balance of two properties: wicking and fast drying. Bamboo fabric loves to absorb moisture and is also fast drying, releasing both heat and moisture at an extremely fast rate into the air. The result is lower skin temperatures, added comfort and a restful night’s sleep. Fabric that regulates a baby’s temperature is called thermo-regulating; meaning it will help your baby to feel cool when they are hot and warm when they are cool.

More and more parents are realizing the benefits of organic products to both their baby’s health and to the environment. So, along with the benefits of thermo-regulating comfort, it is reassuring to know that the fabric against your baby’s skin comes from an organic crop and is not treated with chemical enhancements. Fabric manufactured from viscose from organically grown bamboo is an ideal fit for baby clothes, baby blankets, washcloths and towels. A baby can’t tell you what feels good, but once you have felt bamboo fabric, you’ll know that for any baby’s delicate skin, bamboo fabric is the softest and better choice.

Sending a baby gift to a little newborn you know? Don’t think just cute and colorful – think soft and comfortable … … and you’ll find a happy baby when you pay her a visit!

Starting April 27 through October 31, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is featuring a rooftop bamboo exhibit. Created by twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn, Big Bambú: You Can’t, You Don’t, and You Won’t Stop is a monumental structure made of 5,000 interlocking 30- and 40-foot-long fresh-cut bamboo poles, tied together with 50 miles of nylon rope.

Big Bambú will be continuously constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers, resembling an ever-changing living organism. The first phase of the structure― about 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 30 feet high ― will be completed by opening day.

Unfortunately, New York City is pretty far from where we are in South Carolina, but those of you up north ought to give this a thought!

If you can’t get out there, the evolving state of the work will be documented by the artists in photographs and videos available online.

Our clothing begins its journey as bamboo grown on managed farms/plantations in Southeastern China. Since all of the viscose from bamboo is processed in China and there is an abundance of bamboo growing in China, we use the bamboo grown there.

We import the bamboo fiber from China and complete the manufacturing process – spinning, knitting, dyeing, and sewing – at our facility in Andrews, S.C. Occasionally, we buy yarn from China and then finish the manufacturing of our clothing and baby line in South Carolina.

Two types of fiber are derived from bamboo. The first, mechanical fiber, is not in circulation very much and is not widely used. The second type of fiber, produced via solvent spinning, is technically classified as ‘viscose from bamboo’. Viscose from bamboo is the fiber that we use.

Some facts to consider about producing bamboo clothing:

Bamboo is grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers

Bamboo requires no irrigation

Bamboo rarely needs replanting

Bamboo grows rapidly and can be harvested in 3-5 years

Bamboo produces 35% more oxygen that an equivalent stand of trees

Bamboo is a critical element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Bamboo is an excellent soil erosion inhibitor

Additionally, bamboo fabric is breathable, thermal regulating, wicks moisture better than polyester performance fabrics, will resist odor and is absorbent and fast drying keeping you dryer and more comfortable than any cotton or polyester fabrics.

Our bamboo is Certified Organically Grown and you can see our certifications and read about them here on our Web site. The farm where the bamboo is grown is certified by OCIA International and the bamboo crops are certified by the USDA Organic Seal.
